Product Data Sheet

Duram Showerseal - 'Stop Leaking Showers'

Clear Penetrative Sealer. Stops Leaking Showers Without Removing Tiles!

Description

Duram SHOWERSEAL is a clear, high pH, deep penetrating siloxane / silane waterproofing solution. SHOWERSEAL penetrates in to the tissue of the porous substrate and creates a barrier, below the surface, to prevent the ingress of water. SHOWERSEAL is an effective waterproofing solution and stops leaks without lifting tiles or changing the overall appearance of the surface. Duram Showerseal is therefore a quick, easy and economic method of 'stopping leaks in showers'. SHOWERSEAL is capable of withstanding high pH conditions such as found in new concrete, sand / cement beds and lime based mortars. SHOWERSEAL still allows the diffusion of vapours or 'breathing' ability of the substrate.

Uses

The properties of Duram SHOWERSEAL make it ideal for:
• Sealing of leaking showers or other wet areas without lifting tiles.
• Waterproofing external concrete, render, brick, block walls, FC sheeting, sandstone and porous pavers.
• Prevention of efflorescence (white salt spotting or leaching).
• Protection of sandstone.
• General rain water barrier.
CAUTION: Although unusual, sealed surfaces may be slippery when wet and should be tested prior to use..

Suitable Surfaces

Duram SHOWERSEAL is suitable for the following porous substrates if applied as per data sheets.
» Tiled showers and other wet areas.
» External tiled areas such as decks, terraces and balconies.

Specification

The information contained in this product data sheet is typical but does not constitute a full specification as conditions and specific requirements may vary from project to project. The instructions should be considered as a minimum requirement but the applicator or contractor must use their skill, knowledge and experience to carry out additional works as may be necessary to meet the requirements of the project. Specification for specific projects should be sought from the Company in writing.

Limitations

SHOWERSEAL penetrates in to the tissue of the substrates and accordingly relies its soundness and stability. SHOWERSEAL will not bridge cracks. In order for SHOWERSEAL to work effectively, sufficient product must be absorbed in to the surface to fill the voids within the substrate. Highly porous, sandy and friable surfaces may not contain sufficient density to allow the SHOWERSEAL to create an adequate 'build-up' of Showerseal to form a waterproofing barrier. Test area are highly recommended.

Benefits and Advantages

  • Easy to apply.
  • Forms a waterproofing barrier without changing the overall appearance of the surface.
  • Seals water leaks in tiled areas without lifting the tiles.
  • Highly economic solution.
  • Long lasting protection.
  • Quick drying .
  • Dries clear in a flat (no or low gloss) finish.
  • It can be re - coated.

Precautions in Use

When using the product, risk is considered low if used correctly as intended. When applying Duram SHOWERSEAL it is strongly recommended that all safety precautions are followed as per product label, data sheet and material safety data sheet. As the product contains solvent ensure that all sources of ignition are kept away. Ensure area is well ventilated. In exposed areas, do not apply if rain is imminent and protect coating from rain and inclement weather until fully cured. As a precaution, although unusual we suggest that , at least initially, the surface may be slippery if wet.

Priming and Surface Preparation

Good preparation is essential. Surfaces must be sound, stable, dry, clean and free of dust, loose, flaking, friable material and substances that may diminish adhesion.

All surfaces must be clean, dry, of sound construction, stable and free of any dust, dirt, grease, oil, curing compounds or contaminates that might interfere with adhesion.
FOR SHOWER RECESSES
Do not use shower for 48 hours prior to application. The dryer the surface, grout and tile bed are the better.
Loose or cracked grout must be removed and then replaced with sound grouting and allowed to dry.
Old silicone sealants should be removed and surface cleaned, as solvents in SHOWERSEAL may pit or slightly dissolve the silicone sealant.
Silicones should be replaced after Duram SHOWERSEAL has fully cured.
After application, do not use the shower for at least 24 hours.
GENERAL
Cracks must be repaired. If mortar is suitable then use a non-shrink mortar. If flexibility is required to repair the crack, this should be done after the application of Duram SHOWERSEAL as the solvent may pit or slightly dissolve the sealant.
Ensure surfaces are clean, free of other coatings such as paints and sealers and the substrate is dry.
Test areas are important as, although rare, latent salts or other chemicals may cause some discolouration.

Application

Duram SHOWERSEAL can be applied by brush, roller or poured.
SHOWER RECESSES
Do not use shower for 48 hours prior to application. The dryer the surface, grout and tile bed are the better.
It is essential that the substrate be well saturated.
Begin by treating the walls and then the base of the shower.
Hint: Most water leaks occur at the base of the shower to one tile high and treatment should be concentrated in this region.
For best result, apply a soaking coat of  SHOWERSEAL and allow product to be absorbed. Immediately thereafter, while  the substrate is still wet, apply a second soaking application and allow the product to be absorbed. This process can be repeated several times to ensure that sufficient product has been absorbed. The product should be, in the first instance, applied wet on wet. Then allow the product to dry for 24 hours and apply a final soaking coat.
Excess unabsorbed material should be wiped and soaked up with a cloth.
Avoid excess material from entering the drains.
Do not use shower recess for at least 24 hours after application.

Exterior Areas
Apply as above.
Note: For large areas, particularly out-doors refer to Duram S900.

Coverage

The stated average coverage rate may vary depending upon type, condition, porosity, texture of the surface and application technique.

General coverage rate:
Shower Recess: 250ml to 500ml is usually sufficient for the treatment of a standard tiled shower recess usually applied in 3 soaking coats. The porosity and density of the substrate may require the use of additional material. Our recommendation is to err on the use of additional material as the initial absorption, wet on wet, is very important. Once cured, the absorption of additional material is greatly reduced.
External Areas: Refer S900.

Colours

Duram SHOWERSEAL is a clear product and dries with no or low gloss.

Drying and Curing

Drying and curing of the product is affected by type, dryness and porosity of the surface, temperature, humidity, ventilation, climate conditions and application technique and therefore drying and curing can only be given as a guide.

At 25ºC and 50% RH (per coat):
Touch dry: 2 to 4 hours
Set: 4 to 8 hours
Full cure: Usually the shower recess can be used after 24 hours to 48 hours after applying the final coat.
Service Temperature: 10ºC to 50ºC
Application Temperature: 5ºC to 30ºC

Storage

Duram SHOWERSEAL should be stored in a cool, dry place . Must be kept clear of all sources of ignition and damage. Product is flammable. Shelf life is up to 12 months in unopened or undamaged containers. Available in kits of 250ml and 500ml and 15 Lt Pails.

Clean Up

Generally brushes and cloths are discarded after use.

Tiling, Topping or Top Coating

Not recommended as product is usually applied to tiled areas and left exposed. If area is to be tiled or topped, then we would recommend on of Duram's conventional waterproofing membranes.

Safety & Precautions

Although unusual, sealed surfaces may be initially slippery when wet. The use of solvent resistant gloves, mask and eye protection is recommended. Observe the safety precautions on the product data sheet and material safety data sheet. Product is Class 3 dangerous goods must be declared prior to transportation.

For full safety data refer to the products Material Safety Data Sheet. Observe precautions as per label.
